The Story Behind The Natal Nook: A Journey of Naming and Purpose

When I started The Natal Nook, before it was even a twinkle in my eye, one of the biggest questions was: what on earth am I going to call this business? Naming a business feels a bit like naming a baby, strangely enough. It involves a lot of thinking, second-guessing, and the slight fear you’ll accidentally pick something you’ll regret forever.

The Search for the Perfect Name

As I pondered names, I kept coming back to one word: natal. If you’ve spent any time around pregnancy or birth, you’ll recognise it straight away. Prenatal. Postnatal. Perinatal. It’s one of those words that quietly sits at the centre of the whole journey into parenthood. At its core, natal simply means “relating to birth.”

This felt pretty perfect for the work I do as a midwife and for setting up this wee business of mine.

A Personal Connection

But here’s the slightly funny part of the story—my name is Natalie. (Lovely name, solid choice by my parents, to be fair!) For years, I never thought twice about it. It was just my name. I had known that Natalie actually comes from the Latin word *natalis*, meaning “birth” or “birthday.”

What I hadn't done, though, was connect the dots that Natal and Natalie had the same roots. Essentially… my name has been birth-related this entire time, and I didn't even realise it!

Once I made that connection, the word natal felt like the perfect anchor for my business name. Birth is such an incredible, transformative moment - not just the arrival of a baby, but the beginning of a whole new chapter for a family. The word natal captures that sense of beginnings and new life beautifully.

The Comfort of a Nook

And then there’s the nook. I absolutely adore that word. A nook is a cosy little corner—somewhere safe, warm, and welcoming. When I imagined the kind of support I wanted to offer families, that’s exactly the feeling I hoped to create.

Because birth and new parenthood can be amazing, emotional, overwhelming, beautiful, and chaotic—sometimes all in the same afternoon! Having a calm, supportive space during that time can make all the difference.

That’s what The Natal Nook is all about: a supportive little corner for families as they navigate pregnancy, birth, and those early days with a new baby.

The Essence of a Name

So when I ask what’s in a name, for me, the answer is a whole story. A name that connects birth, beginnings, and a bit of serendipity. A name that reflects both the work I do and the space I want to create. And perhaps a name that, in hindsight, feels like it was waiting for me all along.

Looking back, I can’t help but laugh a little. All this time, the clue was right there in my name. Natalie. Birth day. Birth worker.

I’m choosing to believe that was a bit of cosmic foreshadowing. Or at the very least, excellent accidental branding by my parents.

The Journey Ahead

As I embark on this journey with The Natal Nook, I’m excited to share my knowledge and experience with expectant parents. I want to empower you to achieve a calm and confident birth experience. Together, we can explore the beauty of hypnobirthing and comprehensive birth preparation.

Imagine walking into your birthing space, feeling calm and prepared. Picture yourself surrounded by love and support, ready to welcome your little one into the world. That’s the vision I have for you at The Natal Nook.

Embracing the Adventure

Every birth story is unique, just like every family. Some may be filled with laughter, while others may have moments of uncertainty. But through it all, I believe that having the right support can turn those moments into cherished memories.

So, let’s embrace this adventure together. Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your family, I’m here to guide you through the process.

Let’s create a nurturing environment where you can feel confident and empowered. After all, you deserve to have a positive experience as you bring new life into the world.

In the end, it’s not just about a name. It’s about the connections we make, the stories we share, and the love that surrounds us. I can’t wait to be part of your journey at The Natal Nook.
